The Art of Choosing the Right Location | Salt Lake City, Utah

June 20th, 2024

Hey there! It's me, Heidi Burton. Today, I thought we'd chat about something that often gets overlooked when planning a photoshoot - the location. Just as important as the outfits you choose and the time of day, the location sets the scene and helps define the mood of your photos. When I'm scouting for locations, the first thing that strikes me is the light. Light has a wonderful way of transforming a place, adding depth and drama. Whether it’s a golden hour in a park, or the soft, diffused light in a cozy café, light can make a huge difference in your photos. So, when you're considering a location, think about the lighting during the time of your shoot.

Next up, consider if the location aligns with your style and personality. Are you more comfortable in a natural, outdoorsy setting like the mountains, lake or park, or does the hustle and bustle of a cityscape with its architecture and graffiti walls excite you? Choosing a location where you feel at ease will reflect in your photos, making them more personal and authentic. Also, don't forget about the practicality of the location. Consider things like parking, accessibility, and whether there are facilities nearby. You don't want to be trekking miles in your photoshoot attire or worrying about a place to change outfits.

If you have seen my instragam or perused my website, you know I have a specific aesthetic and style. Location plays a HUGE part in creating that style. One of the main things I look for when scouting is a neutral ground like a path or light colored sidewalk. The sun will reflect off that ground and create a beautiful reflection of light onto the faces of my subjects, plus it breaks up the colors from outfits and surrounding trees and environment.

Lastly, another big element I look for when scouting is are there any trees to diffuse the sun? The sun can be harsh, and while I can still shoot in direct sunlight, I much prefer the skintones when the sun is diffused causing some open shade. Plus the sun through trees is just perfection.
